There is More Demand for Workplace and Safety Eyewear in the Age of COVID

ACCORDING TO THE National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, of the 2,000 or so eye injuries that occur daily, about 90 percent could be lessened or prevented with the right eyewear. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration requires that eye protection meet the 2010 ANSI Z87.1 standard. According to Walman Optical, wrap frame orders, especially full seal for protection against airborne pathogens and viruses, have seen a sharp increase of late.

Smart Ways to Sell Safety/Workplace Eyewear

Mike ScheuermanSherman Optical, Edmonds, WA

I talk to patients about their hobbies (e.g., whether they ride a motorcycle), and their work. I then recommend eyewear. I used to be in the Marine Corps, so I can relate to safety eyewear needs. We’re near a Boeing plant and a hospital, and have a contract with a local fire department for their safety eyewear needs. Advancements in digital lenses for wrapped frames have made these popular. They cover the eye socket well and a shelf edging system can take off extra thickness on the digital lens to make the Rx work better. Our patients like Wiley X’s climate control series with foam cavity seal. These need a proper fit. We make our own eyewear, except for safety eyewear, which we send to the Wiley X lab for the safety stamp.

The doctors in both of our practices thoroughly discuss with patients their hobbies, lifestyles and occupations to recommend the best products for specific situations. For example, if a patient is a shooter or hunter, they might suggest shooting glasses with a yellow tint, or if the patient is on the water, a high-quality polarized lens. A goggle with a fire protectant shield might be a good option for someone who does woodworking or welding. For those working on electronic devices we might offer a computer or workspace lens with a blue light blocking option. Smith’s safety glasses can prevent injury. Several accounts have asked us to make OSHA-approved safety eyewear for employees who work on a production line or in construction. We make OnGuard and ArmouRx safety glasses for them.
