TECHNOLOGY ADVANCEMENTS HAVE enabled practice owners to add equipment that is more precise, faster, and smaller than older, bulkier instruments. Traditionally, for refraction you needed a full refraction lane, exam chair, phoropter, a chart, and a complete setup. However, now several manufacturers have come out with all-in-one complete workstations that offer “refraction in a box” and provide patients with simulations of real-life conditions too. “This makes it a game changer for patients, giving eyecare professionals the potential to increase refraction capacity dramatically and boost practice growth without having to remodel the practice,” said Jean-Christophe Paris, senior vice president, Essilor Instruments Americas.

Smart Ways to Use Space Saving Equipment
S. Barry Eiden, ODNorth Suburban Vision Consultants, Deerfield, IL

Having many instruments that take up a large footprint can be frustrating. That’s why I love Heru, which is portable and multifunctional. It’s a very attractive instrument both as a screening tool and a diagnostic tool for complete eye exams. Its new software offers an advanced diagnostic threshold for visual fields and extends color vision testing and dark adaptometry to give an early indication of advanced macular degeneration. Our previous electrodiagnostic measuring system had a large footprint until we moved to the portable RETeval device for electroretinography. I like to see multifunctionality where several technologies are combined into one instrument, and a portable device. Cost can be a limiting factor but doctors need to think about the financial return on investment as well as the impact new technologies could have on their practice.

e I wanted something that wouldn’t take up too much space in the back room, which has only about 400 sq. ft, for a lab, CL area, break room, bathroom, and storage room. A Coburn Technologies rep recommended two pieces together that make a great space-saving station for lens edging. We bought Coburn’s HPE-410 Excelon Lens Edger, which has an integrated tracer so there is no need to make room for a separate tracer. We also purchased Coburn’s HBK-410 Smart Blocker, which is a compact, semi-automated blocker. We customized a cabinet with shelves so it now perfectly fits a lensometer, frame warmer, edger, smart blocker, and manual hand wheel. I can do all that I need to do in the space that I have.
