Contact Lens Pricing Controversy Catches the Attention of the NYT

Optometrists said to be reacting “with delight” to minimum-price trend.

Prompted by Costco’s new lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson over the company’s mandatory minimum sale price for contact lenses, the New York Times takes a look at the controversy surrounding the pricing policy, which has by now been adopted by Alcon, Bausch & Lomb and Cooper Vision as well. The Times portrays the optometric community as reacting “with delight” to the move among major lens manufacturers, as it eliminates the possibility of steep discounting by e-commerce merchants and others. “Gary Gerber, an industry consultant who hosts the industry podcast –‘The Power Hour,’ said in an episode last fall that the policies were “the coolest thing to happen in contact lenses in the last 20 years.” He added, “It allows the doctors to compete and be profitable.”
