This optical manager with over 25 years in the industry considers managing people his biggest challenge … and his greatest joy. “Sometimes they impress you, other times they disappoint,” he shares. “One of my favorite parts of running my business is training a new hire that gets it. Every once in a while we hire a rockstar future optician.” Other favorites are the troubleshooting, detective work and everyday adventure of an optical … But sometimes favorites are also least favorites. “Planning can be challenging; every day is an adventure. Whether it’s staff with car problems or a non-compliant patient.” Luckily, he has a laundry list of ways to shed the stress. “To maintain the little sanity I have left, I need time outside: flyfishing, biking, walking, canoeing, hiking, and gardening. I’m stoked about the peonies I planted last year. As an introvert, I am perfectly happy doing these things alone but I am usually with my wife and two boys.” And then there is food. “I enjoy cooking a tasty meal almost as much as I enjoy making a great pair of glasses, both I consider a labor of love.”
