A new report projects who will become the top five U.S. retailers by 2026, with Amazon expected to overtake Walmart and hold nearly 15% of the nation’s retail market share by then.
From Edge by Ascential, the report says that e-commerce “will continue to be the largest driver of retail growth in the U.S.” and will top $1 trillion by the end of 2022. E-commerce is expected to account for 30.5% of total U.S. retail sales by 2026, up from 24.6% in 2021.
The “2022 United States Retail Landscape and Go-to-Market Planning Report” predicts that, by 2024, Amazon will surpass Walmart as the nation’s largest retailer. By 2026, Amazon is expected to hold 14.9% of U.S. retail market share, with Walmart holding 12.7%.
Costco will grow its share from 3.8% to 4.4% and ascend to the No. 3 position within the next four years, the report forecasts. Home Depot will become the fourth-largest retailer, with a market share increase from 3.7% in 2021 to 3.9% in 2026. The Kroger Co. rounds out the top five.
