Diabetic Retinopathy More Prevalent

A new study published in JAMA Ophthalmology, “Prevalence of Diabetic Retinopathy in the US in 2021,” found an estimated 9.6 million people in the US (26.4% of those with diabetes) had diabetic retinopathy (DR), and 1.84 million (5.1% of those with diabetes) had vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy (VTDR). The number of people aged 40 years and older living with diabetes-related eye disease in the US more than doubled since prevalence was last estimated in 2004 and now approximately 1 in 4 Americans ages 40 and older with diabetes have DR.

New Optician Development Program

Optical Training Institute has launched its Optician Development Program (ODP), a career training program offering a comprehensive learning experience to prepare aspiring opticians to become ABO and NCLE certified and licensed in applicable states. The ODP features three courses: Boot Camp, which covers fundamental topics; Spectacle, focused on spectacle lenses, frames, and troubleshooting eyewear; and Contact Lens, which explores fitting, evaluating, and troubleshooting contact lenses, along with patient education and care. The courses combine high-quality content, multimedia resources, and an online learning platform using comprehensive, up-to-date course materials.

Aoa Debuts Eye Health Game

The American Optometric Association has launched Blink Land, a single-player mobile game that teaches players about eye health and its relation to screen time. Over 227 million Americans play video games and AOA’s 2022 Gamer Survey results revealed the average gamer has experienced various eye-related symptoms from gaming, including eye strain, headaches, dry eyes and blurred vision. Blink Land educates gamers on how screen time and eye health are connected through minigames, facts, and trivia. The game was developed as part of Eye Deserve More, AOA’s national public awareness campaign, and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
