The Couple Behind Todd Rogers Eyewear Loves to Educate and Delight

And in their downtime it’s dance parties, hitting the slopes and a little hot tub time after hours.

Our 2018 America’s Finest Optical Retailers first place winners may be handing off their baton, but that doesn’t mean they are slowing down. They still provide the best eyecare and eyewear Andover, MA has ever seen. “We think of ourselves as educators,” the couple says. “There’s a tremendous satisfaction in watching the ‘aha’ moment when a client realizes they can see better than they ever have because they have walked through our doors.” And it seems that everyone walks in their doors… “From the police chief to the football coach, the beloved librarian to the favorite dog groomer, and the whole staff of the local pub… ‘Everyone’s famous in a small town…’ and they’re all wearing our glasses.” With a clientele like that, the Berberians sometimes need to unwind. At home that looks like a dance party with the kids. “Nothing beats a good ol’ fashioned kitchen dance off.” And when they can — usually not a busy Saturday in winter – they like to hit the Vermont slopes. “When the four of us are at the top of the mountain together it feels like we’re on top of the world.” And after the kids go to sleep … “Hot tub, just the two of us, under the pines, snow falling, a libation and some slow jams. That’s all we’ll divulge!”

Drs. Michael and Kimberly Hoyt
Artisan Eyeworks, Ashland, OR

This February — the month dedicated to love — we highlight a husband and wife team, who after seeing 40 plus patients a day for 20 years, found love again … the love of optometry. They opened Artisan in 2014 to see fewer patients and spend more time with them. They enjoy watching something they built from scratch thrive, being involved in the optical, and being able to have genuine relationships with their patients. In comparison to their old lives, stressful days are rare, but on those days they get out late, “We’ll go out for a nice dinner,” shares Michael. “We’re lucky to have quite a few really good restaurants in Ashland.”

Dr. Courtney Rhodes
Optique, Austin, TX

It’s official, no eyecare business owners like insurance… not that this should come as any surprise to INVISION readers. Dr. Courtney Rhodes, of course, is no different. Add to that “worrying about the race to the bottom with online retailers” and you have her two least favorite things about running her business. Thankfully, the lifelong patient connections she makes, the freedom to think outside the box, and curating fun eyewear for her optical makes up for it. She also has spending time with her family and pets to look forward to at the end of the day. “We’ll cook dinner as a family to catch up on each other’s days, go on a walk with our dog, or my husband and I will enjoy a glass of wine together.”

Dr. Abby Jakob
EYES – Dr. Abby Jakob, Kingsville, ON

Dr. Abby Jakob’s favourite (she is Canadian after all) parts of running her business are choosing her own hours, taking time off when she knows she needs it “for my health and sanity,” and becoming more well-known in her community. “It inspires me to get even more involved with community events, volunteer groups, and fundraisers, and that, in turn, helps my business even more as a result!” Of course even jobs we love come with things we don’t love so much. For Dr. Jakob that’s the time required for her social media channels. “I want to engage people and show my true personality with fun, clever, or visually pleasing posts, and it takes up so much time!” Other than that, hiring staff (and potentially having to fire them!), and finding a balance between seeing patients and setting boundaries with her time and schedule, rank in her top three least favorite things. Luckily, every day she gets to go home to hug and kiss smother her husband and all of her cats. “I [also] love going for walks with my dog, one of my cats (Booboo) actually walks with us, and my awesome husband, Patrick.” If it’s a weekend, you can find her in “an old hole-in-the-wall bar with live music, requesting all of my favourite songs and singing along!”
